Waitaki Valley School is continuing its success in AgriKidsNZ competitions.

A trio of pupils from the Kurow school came third in the Aorangi regional final at the North Otago A&P Show on Saturday.

Itaia Chapman, Tamati Dennison and Maddison Phillips (all 11), who called themselves the Redbandz, were among 120 primary and intermediate-age pupils taking part in the event, run in conjunction with the FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest.

They had to complete a series of eight rural-based modules as quickly as possible.

The Redbandz team will join the Ashburton Intermediate School winners and Mt Somers Springburn School runners-up at the national final in Napier in July.

Waitaki Valley School entered four teams. The Redbandz was the only one from North Otago to make the Aorangi final.

“As a school we are very proud of our record, as this is the third time in five years that we have been represented at the nationals,” principal Deidre Senior said.

Waitaki Valley School won the Aorangi competition in 2015 and 2016 and went on to national finals in Taupo and Timaru respectively.

The FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year Aorangi contest for secondary school pupils, formerly called TeenAg, was dominated by Geraldine High School.

Three of its teams took out all three placings and the first two are also off to the nationals.
