State Highway One is open again after heavy rain flooded parts of the road.
A New Zealand Transport Agency spokesperson said the Hilderthorpe section of State Highway One re-opened at 1am yesterday morning.
“There is no longer any water on the highway which doesn’t appear to have sustained any significant damage as a result of the flooding.
“However, our contractor will monitor for any issues with the road surface now that traffic is using the highway again.”
Waitaki District Council roading manager Michael Voss said it was convenient to have State Highway One open again.
The main arterial routes through the area were also open now, with only some side roads remaining shut due to flooding, he said.
“Most of them will be open by the end of this week at least.
“We should be back to normal in three weeks.”
Regarding the area’s bridges, work would be done to clear built-up debris from them once waters had lowered, Mr Voss said.
“We’ll do it as soon as we practically can.”
