Storms brewing – but should bypass Oamaru

Bad weather is on the way but Oamaru will escape the worst of it, Met Service meteorologist Daniel Corbett says.

From today until the weekend, showers and rain will be experienced, but the thunderstorms hitting Fiordland and the area around Twizel will just miss the town.

“The Oamaru area’s just on the edge of the area at low risk for thunderstorms,” Mr Corbett said.

Oamaru would typically get temperatures around 20 degrees at this time of year but for the next few days locals could expect about 15 degrees.

“It won’t feel much like summer over the next few days,” Mr Corbett said.

“It will just feel cool.”

But beautiful weather will not be too far away, after showers today and tomorrow the wet weather will begin to ease on Friday, Mr Corbett said.

Despite a cool start to Saturday, Oamaruvians could expect fine weather and warmer days over the weekend, he said.

Sunday was “looking pretty good through most of the day”, he said.

And after so much doom and gloom in the weather as of late, “it’s a pleasure to actually report that”, Mr Corbett said.
