Landowners wanting to take advantage of permitted burns are being asked to check updated wetaher forecasts before lighting up.
Waitaki District Council emergency services manager Chris Raine said with severe northwest gales ahead of a front which will sweep over the country from today (Monday), rural landowners are asked to plan ahead for permitted burns.
“We are urging farmers not to light up late today (Monday) or tomorrow (Tuesday,” he said.
“A very strong northwest flow will spread onto New Zealand tomorrow (Tuesday) ahead of an active front which will move onto the South Island.
“Severe northwest gales are likely ahead of the front for Otago and other parts of New Zealand and there is a moderate chance these will hang around tomorrow (Tuesday).”
Mr Raine said the best advice is to check the weather forecast before lighting up and if in doubt, to leave burnoffs until better conditions prevail.
