The Waitaki community has come together to commemorate the life of a man who changed the world, Nelson Mandela.
A ceremony held at the Oamaru Opera House last night saw Archdeacon Bernard Wilkinson, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher, event organiser Philip van Zijl and more speak on the impact of Nelson Mandela and what he meant to the world.
Archdeacon Wilkinson started the ceremony and spoke of how he “simply did not have any new words to use about this man”.
People had spoken at length around the world about Mandela’s life, and it was “hugely appropriate” that Oamaru did the same, he said.
“This week we are seeing history being made. We will always remember these days.”
Philip van Zijl spoke about his personal journey and how Mandela completely changed his life.
Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher spoke about the life of Nelson Mandela and how he became who he was. “The world has lost one of its leaders,” he said. “Rest in peace, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.”
