A World War 1 medal that once belonged to the family of a North Otago man killed in the conflict may finally find its rightful place.
Several years ago, Oamaru woman Margery Uttley unearthed a medal that bore the name of John William (Jack) Cowan, a farmer from Kia Ora who was killed in 1918, while gardening at her 19 Till St property.
The medal Mrs Uttley dug up was a British War Medal, one of two that were generally awarded during the conflict.
