An event being held next week by Oamaru Steam and Rail will help raise funds to restore a 1921 locomotive that used to work at the port.
The Silver Fern Railcar will be running from Oamaru to Shag Point and back on Wednesday to raise funds to restore the Fowler steam locomotive.
Oamaru Steam and Rail general manager Harry Andrew said they needed to raise $150,000 to get the locomotive back up and running.
It used work for the Oamaru Harbour Board from the late 1920s to the 1960s when it was turned into playground equipment at the Oamaru Public Gardens until 1986, he said.
“We’ve wanted to restore it for a long time,” the manager said.
It would take a lot of fundraising and nearly five years to get it working again and they hoped to have it working for the public on Sundays, Mr Andrew said.
The fundraiser Silver Fern Railcar trip will leave from Oamaru Station at 12pm and return about 2.45pm on Wednesday, May 14.
Tickets cost $38 and are available from the i-SITE or by calling Mr Andrews on 434 7525 or 027 277 4678.
